This dataset presents state-level statutes and regulations on prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) laws covering reporting requirements, mandates requiring providers to check PDMP databases before prescribing controlled substances, and provisions regulating access.
The dataset builds upon existing data published on the Prescription Drug Abuse Policy System that capture details of PDMP administration, access and registration, and reporting and authorized use from January 1, 1998, through July 1, 2016. This dataset captures details of policies in effect across all 50 states and the District of Columbia in effect between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2019. This dataset includes several new variables not found in the original three datasets, providing more detail and nuance around provider responsibilities when it comes to checking the PDMP prior to prescribing under the law.
The data are part of an ongoing collaboration with Dr. Kao-Ping Chua, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan Medical School and the Susan B. Meister Child Health Evaluation and Research Center.
