State Workplace Wellness Laws: A Mapping Study

The research team will use LawAtlas to create a dataset systematically reviewing and analyzing existing state laws and regulations relating to workplace wellness programs. Congress revised the federal law related to employer-based wellness programs, which has spurred national interest that such programs can prevent and control chronic disease and health care costs. However, many gaps and outstanding concerns with the federal law exist, such as a lack of requirement to show program efficacy and concerns over voluntariness.

Mapping State and Federal Occupational Safety and Health Laws and Regulations to Increase Knowledge and Improving Worker-Protective Standards

The study will collect data on state and federal regulations concerned with protecting workers from specific chemical, physical, biological, mechanical, or psychosocial hazards and will be compiled from publicly available federal and state regulatory sources.

Family and Medical Leave Law: Variations in State Protections for Workers' Health

The federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides a basic set of protections for workers who are injured or ill, for new parents, and for workers who need to care for a family member. Family and medical leave access represents an essential element of worker, family, and population health. While there has been limited quantitative and qualitative analysis of the impact and utilization of the federal FMLA, very little attention is known about the content or outcomes associated with state family and medical leave laws.

Earned Sick Leave Laws

This map presents state-level statutes and regulations that regulate earned sick leave laws in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, as of January 1, 2021. Specifically, the map identifies whether earned sick leave is regulated by state law, the probationary period an employer may impose before allowing an employee to use leave, the rate of accrual, the limit an employer may place on the use and accrual of leave, and under which circumstances leave may be used by an employee.

Ban the Box Laws

This dataset identifies whether a state-level Ban the Box law exists; whether it applies to private or public employers; the type of employers that are exempted; the point in the hiring process at which employers may consider an applicant’s criminal history, along with the penalties for violating those regulations. This dataset presents statutes, regulations, and executive orders that regulate Ban the Box policies in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, as of January 1, 2021.
